A Brief History of Our Restaurant & Our Historic Home

Almost two hundred years ago, the cobblestones of Main Street echoed with the reverent simplicity of Quaker speech and the colorful rhythms of foreign tongues from all corners of the world. The wharves were crowded with casks of oil and bustling sailors outfitting ships bound for far-off shores.

This was Nantucket Island in 1845 — the very year the Jared Coffin House was built as the island’s first mansion, with its brick façade and steel roof standing strong through fires and storms.

The Jared Coffin House — Home of Our Restaurant

Originally built by Jared Coffin, one of Nantucket’s wealthiest ship owners, the house was designed so his wife could live closer to town. Though she later returned to Boston, the mansion became a symbol of strength and resilience, surviving the Great Fire of 1846 and serving countless guests over the years.

Through many hands and transformations — from public house and billiard saloon to elegant inn and local favorite dining space — the spirit of community and hospitality has remained at its heart.

The Return of The Tap Room

In 1976, Philip and Margaret Read brought new life to the space, opening The Tap Room as a beloved year-round gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Decades later, after careful restoration and reimagining, the Nantucket Tap Room honors this legacy with a welcoming tavern vibe, classic New England plates, and a sense of history in every detail.
